Humanities Faire 2025

The Humanities Faire is a signature project of the Project-Based Learning program at Jesse Remington High School, where students bring history to life through creativity and collaboration. For this all-school Humanities project, students design scripts, sets, and costumes, taking on the roles of key historical figures to both learn and teach important moments in particular time periods. Through interactive games, activities, and our new Marketplace, students make the past engaging and memorable for all who attend.

Student Reflections on Humanities Faire, 2025-26

Freshmen

Callen’s Reflections on the Humanities Faire, 2025-26 Beginning in early September I heard everyone talking about the Humanities Faire and how much preparation was needed for success. I was very confused about everything they were talking about: the essays, the costumes and all of the acting. I wasn't sure if it was a big presentation or a play. We started gathering in the Communications Center (CC) more often, and when the teachers talked about it more things started to clear up for me. But at the time I still thought we would be doing it at the Deerfield Fair. Soon after I found out it would be down the road from the school at the Jesse Remington Farm, and we would build sets and put a lot of effort into this Humanities Faire. The most important part was joining a group. I thought it would be good for me to pick one I was interested in. I walked around and visited all of the groups and I ended up deciding on Ben and Emma's group, Westward Expansion, because I liked the ideas they proposed and the subject matter. Unfortunately, the research that I had already done before I got into the group wasn't helpful because I researched Thomas Edison’s inventions which was covered by a different group. The next few days we worked on big poster boards, filling them up with ideas and concepts. One of the ideas was to do a bar scene and present a conversation, which didn't sound great to me. I am ok with reading to an audience but not with delivering memorized lines. That was definitely something new that I improved in. When we first went to the Jesse Remington farm and mapped out where we would build all of the sets that we would be presenting on, I began to understand the whole idea of the Faire much better. The layout made more sense to me where people would walk around to see each of the four student groups’ sets to watch us present all that we have studied to them. Then came all of the research and all of the hard work. We each had to write an essay about the figure in history that we portray. I chose to be Meriwether Lewis and my partner for the presentations was my friend Josh who portrayed William Clark. After we finished our essays, we used the information to build scripts for the presentations. We kept notes in leather notebooks to help us with our lines when we presented about the exploration, which helped a lot. At the time I still didn't have my costume for it and asked my mom for help. She found a great costume that ended up getting chosen for one of the best costumes there. I learned a lot in my first Humanities Faire!

Sophomores

Elisa's Reflections on the Humanities Faire, 2025-26 (Elisa is one of our international students and is in her second year at JRHS. She hails from Taizhou of the Jiangsu Province in China, not far from Shanghai.) From September to the performance in late October, we did a great job for the Humanities Faire. Researching, preparing for customs, drawing, scripts, games and markets, everything came through and we finally made it!! There were so many beautiful drawings, fun activities and interesting goods in the Faire, and it was such a success. This year I was George Stephenson, a British engineer in the 1800s. I did a lot of researching, and learned more about him, his locomotives and railways. I worked on fun games about origami railways and sold railway deeds wherever on a Monopoly board during the market time. It was a joyful ending and I actually learned a lot through the Humanities Faire time. I improved my stress management skills during this Humanities Faire season. While I learned how to manage stress during last year’s Humanities Faire, my skill improved this year through working on my script, activity, and the market. When I was preparing for the market, I was worried about many things, like how I can ask people to come to my store, how I can sell my railway deeds, and why people should buy it or what the benefits are. I didn’t know how I could explain myself and my goods. I put all the research information together and picked up what I needed, and then formulated the ideas into sentences that I needed to communicate at the market. I also picked many helpful sentences from my script and the guidance Josiah gave me. Prior to the Faire, I was able to practice my sales presentation, which helped me succeed. All of this preparation helped me to reduce stress as well as improved my performance. I also improved my teamwork skills. Last year, I didn’t genuinely work with partners or help my group because I was new to the school and my English skills weren’t strong yet. However this year, I worked with Josiah and Elizabeth a lot for scripts, activities, and the market. When we practiced selling on the Jesse Farm, I was nervous and didn't know what to do. Elizabeth showed me how to introduce myself and the railway deeds as well as how to show these deeds to guests. She also helped me pronounce words correctly, and encouraged me that I can do it. During the market time, she helped to bring guests to my little “store” and introduced my goods to them. I appreciate her very much. It also helped me learn how to perform better. In my role, I needed to act confused, shocked, and express other emotions. I learned to use my face and body better and practiced to be an “actress”. That was really fun and literally helped me a lot to perform better and be more confident.
