A Summer Wedding: Ellie Philbrick and Mikka Hyvonen

On Saturday, July 20, 2024, God blessed Ellie Philbrick (Class of 2019 and current JRHS faculty) and Mikka Hyvonen with a beautiful day for their marriage. From the nephew who performed his ring bearing job with all the dedication that a two year old can muster to the New England style barn dance, the day was set for a time of celebration and joy!

During the ceremony, Pastor Peter shared a poignant verse from Ecclesiastes about the strength of a three-stranded cord, symbolizing the union of Ellie, Mikka, and Jesus Christ in marriage. This image resonated deeply with them as they committed to supporting, protecting, and nurturing each other as followers of Jesus Christ.

At the reception, Grandpa Philbrick gave a touching speech about the couple’s perseverance over the past five years, leading up to their marriage. How they both continued with their studies and waited for God’s best plan. The Matron of Honor, Anna Shalda (‘13), reminisced about growing up with Ellie and offered marriage advice. The best man, Lukkas Hyvonen (‘22), humorously claimed the credit for introducing them and toasted their future together.

The father of the Bride spoke to the couple comparing marriage to oxen working together. While this analogy may seem unusual, it held special significance for Ellie,  who has raised and shown oxen her whole life. Oxen are paired together in a yoke to share the workload; what one cannot accomplish alone, they achieve together. Their shared purpose is to fulfill the tasks they were meant to do side by side. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus presents a different perspective on the yoke. He invites those who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest, promising that His yoke is gentle and His burden is light. Embracing the yoke of Jesus, a Christian couple finds peace, rest, and Godly purpose.

Mikka and Ellie are now united together “they are no longer two, but one flesh (Matthew 19:6). They are equally yoked as believers in Jesus Christ destined to do great things for God which is a beautiful image to behold.

JRHS was well represented!

While we could recount more beautiful moments and details from Ellie and Mikka’s wedding, one thing remains certain: the ceremonial celebration unites not only two individuals but also two beautiful families bringing glory to God as it is designed by our Creator. Congratulations to Mikka and Ellie Hyvonen!
