The Washington, DC team had a full day yesterday of learning and serving with Little Lights Ministry. The team met with the director of the program, who shared about the challenge of race in America. This was done from a biblical perspective, reminding us that all of us are made in the image of God. We also learned a little bit about the ways in which the housing crisis is affecting lower income residents of Washington, DC.

Little Lights Ministry was created to help children and families have hope. Part of that is providing a safe place for children to be after school, where they can have help with their homework and be served a meal. The ministry has over 700 volunteers, many of whom serve weekly.
Our team was able to come alongside and help with their homework club at four different locations spread across Ward 7 of Washington, DC. After serving, here are a few reflections and thoughts from some students:
“I was surprised at how trusting the students were of us, and I was surprised that one even gave me a hug when they were leaving.” ~ Wesley
“I just thought it was fun how, for an afternoon, I could be a fun person that kids who hang out with.” ~ Sadie
“It was great to have the kids be so thankful for us, and it was easy to get to know them.” ~ Sarah
“It was very beneficial that we had the chance to learn more about how they live and what they have to go through as it helps us understand them better.” ~ Valeria
We were asked to not take pictures while we are doing ministry… so we will be more creative tomorrow about finding ways to snap some more active photos.
