A week ago, Jesse Remington senior Emma Cross competed at The Big E—the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Known as the world’s premier competition for working steer teams, The Big E brings together top youth competitors to demonstrate not only their skill in guiding teams in the ring but also their commitment to sportsmanship, teamwork, and cooperation. More than a showcase of animal handling and husbandry, the event cultivates discipline, resilience, and camaraderie.
Since last year, Emma has poured her heart into preparing for this competition. After selecting her team of oxen, Mick and Mater, she faithfully cared for them, trained them rigorously, and competed with them at fairs across New Hampshire to earn her spot at The Big E. She joined four other 4-H working steer teams to proudly represent New Hampshire at this multi-state event.
Emma set two personal goals: (1) to qualify for The Big E and (2) to avoid a last-place finish. She not only achieved both but far exceeded her expectations, earning remarkable results:
Fourth place blue ribbon – Fit and Show
Sixth place blue ribbon – Senior Cart Pull
First place blue ribbon – Sled Pull
Third Overall – Senior Teamster
Senior Sportsmanship Award
We are very proud of this young woman! Her grit, determination, and the love she’s shown for Mick and Mater are truly inspiring.
