Faculty culture doesn't just happen on its own. Headmaster Philbrick is cultivating essential values into the faculty culture, as much as he is with student culture. Each month, team members are seeking to increase their capacity to serve the students by staying focused on our Faculty Core Values. Each month at our Team Meetings, we pass along "Jesse the Sentinel". The award stands for: Empathy and Understanding, Proactive Hard Work, Orderliness and Self Discipline, Resilience and Grit, Honor and Respect. This month, Dan Burgher passed it along to our Girls Basketball Coaches, Anna Shalda and Elisabeth Deacon, with the following remarks to support:
Passing Along Jesse the Sentinel
By Dan Burgher
I did something new this winter, I went to a basketball game. It's this game that was invented in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by a gym teacher. They use a round ball and hoops, etc, ha ha
I would like to celebrate the efforts of our girls basketball coaches Anna and Besse by passing along Jesse the Sentinel to them.
They show empathy and understanding by their willingness to patiently work with anyone willing to try, even students with no experience at all. They provide meaningful corrections when mistakes are made, and steady encouragement whether they win or lose a game.
Proactive hard work is demonstrated week after week by teaching students how to be a team and work together; that hard work equals results as well as a game well-played.
Orderliness and self discipline are modeled by these coaches as they set up and follow the schedule of the many practices and games. They teach the many techniques of the game and how to improve their skills.
For resilience and grit I'll use a quote from a student, "They are the best coaches because of their hearts for the Lord, their patience, their skill, their willingness to teach, and how when we fail they turn it into a learning experience and equip us for the next game"
Honor and respect is shown through another quote, “I have learned so much from them in many different ways. How to love the sport, how to be a good team player, how to lose with a good attitude, how to succeed and get better, and how to be a good Christian while playing a competitive sport.”
Thank you for all you do. We appreciate you.
