At Jesse Remington High School, semester portfolios are a valuable tool designed to help students improve their learning and study skills. By thinking critically about the material of the semester, the portfolio gives students the opportunity to reflect on what they’ve learned throughout the semester. By reviewing key concepts and writing about their studies, students reinforce their understanding of the material and develop essential skills that will benefit them in college and beyond.
Creating a portfolio also provides a chance for self-reflection. Students can evaluate what went well and identify areas for improvement. By understanding their strengths and weaknesses, they become more aware of how they learn best. This awareness helps them develop better study habits, making them more effective and confident learners.
To support new freshmen and students unfamiliar with portfolio writing, Jesse Remington High School created the Super Hero program. This initiative pairs seniors with freshmen, providing guidance on how to write and edit portfolios as well as offer encouragement. This mentorship program benefits both the freshmen and the seniors. Freshmen gain confidence in their writing and feel supported in their academic journey, while seniors strengthen their leadership and communication skills.
